Frequently Asked Questions

Job Seekers

Application Process

Q: Do your services cost anything?
A: No. Our services are always free for job seekers.
Q: Where do I start?
A: The first step is to send in your resume. We must review your resume to see if we are currently working on any positions that may be a fit for you. Find out how to do this by clicking on the link Apply.
Q: I’ve sent in my resume. Now what happens?
A: Your resume is in the hands of our recruiters. If a recruiter thinks you may be a good fit for one of the positions they are working on, you will be called to arrange an interview time in our office. This process typically takes 5 to 10 business days after you have sent in your resume. If you do not hear from us, we most likely do not have an available fit for you at this time. Feel free to apply again or send in an updated resume in the future.
Q: I have been called by your office to come in for an initial interview. What's next?
A: We will send you an email confirming your interview time. This email will also contain a link to our online registration form. Please complete this registration form prior to coming in for your interview. If you receive an error message while filling out your online form, please do not try completing the form again. Instead, come into our office 15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview, and we will set you up in our office to complete the form. The online form does save each page as you complete it, so despite the error message, it is likely that we received enough of your information and will not need you to complete the form a second time, but this will be determined once you arrive at the office.
Q: What can I expect of this initial job interview?
A: This is a formal job interview. We want to know why our employers should hire you. Dress professionally and present us with your skills, knowledge and goals. The entire interview process in our office typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. You will have a formal interview with one of our recruiters. You may be asked to do some testing on programs related to the type of work you are looking for.
Q: I have done my initial interview at your office. When will I get a call about a job opportunity?
A: This will be different for each candidate. At About Staffing, we are all about making the right fit to suit your needs and our clients' needs. When we think we have a fit for you, we will call you and talk to you about the available position. What we ask of you is that you call us to check in every 1-2 weeks so that we can keep your file up-to-date, and to inform us that you are still looking for work. You can also check the job postings on our website and call us if there are any available positions that you would like to be considered for.
Q: Can I apply at other agencies and look for jobs on my own?
A: Yes. We encourage you to actively seek work on your own. We do ask, however, that you let us know if you have found work by other means so that we can inactivate your file.

SIN (Social Insurance Number) Card

Q: Why do I need to bring my SIN card to the interview?
A: As per Service Canada, employers are required to view an employee’s SIN card within three days of an employment start date. At About Staffing you have the following options:
  • Show your SIN card at the time of your interview
  • Come back to the About Staffing office to show your SIN card within three days of the temporary assignment start date
Q: I don’t have my SIN card. What do I do?
A: You will have to send in an application for a SIN card or replacement card. Click here to download the application and follow the steps on the second page. You will need an original primary document. Information on primary documents can be found here.

Q: Where can I go to apply for my SIN card in person?
A: There are four Service Canada locations in each Calgary and Edmonton. Find the list here.
Q: How long will it take to get my SIN card?
A: If your application meets the requirements, you will receive your SIN card by mail within 20 business days of Service Canada receiving the application.
Q: Is there a fee?
A: A $10.00 fee is required to replace a SIN card.

Payroll Process

Temporary Candidates are paid by About Staffing. Direct-Hire candidates are paid directly by the employer and will need to discuss the payroll process with the employer.

Temporary Candidates:

Q: When do I get paid?
A: About Staffing pays candidates weekly. You will be paid on Friday for the previous week's work.
Q: How do I get paid?
A: In order for you to be paid on time, we will need two things from you; your timesheet and your direct deposit information (we only need your direct deposit information once). Your timesheet for the week must be received by SUNDAY AT MIDNIGHT. There are no exceptions as our third party payroll company has strict deadlines in order to process the information.
Q: What is direct deposit information?
A: About Staffing uses a process called EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer). Your pay is directly deposited into your bank account. To complete this process, we will need your bank account information, Social Insurance Number, and your date of birth. The form can be found here.

Q: How do I send in my direct deposit information?
A: The direct deposit form can be found here. Alternatively, you can pick up the forms from our office, or call us at 403-508-1000 in Calgary or 780-409-8100 in Edmonton, and have us fax them to you. Once filled out, please fax back to 403-508-1010.
Q: Why didn't I get paid?
A: Either we are missing your timesheet, or your direct deposit information, or your direct deposit information is incorrect. If you missed the deadline of Sunday at midnight to send in your information, please make sure we receive all correct information from you by the following Sunday at midnight to ensure you are paid on the following pay period.
Q: Do I get paid for the statutory holiday as a temporary candidate?
A: As per Alberta Labour Standards, you must meet three criteria in order to be paid. Firstly, you must have worked for us for more than 30 days. Secondly, you must have worked at least five of the last nine days that the holiday fall on. Lastly, you must work your last scheduled shift before and your first scheduled shift after the statutory holiday.
